Apply the rule for the road and vehicle

Bulgaria drives on the right. The official road-safety and EU country guidance cover restraints, child seats, phone use, daytime lights, alcohol, speed and winter equipment, with some requirements differing by road, vehicle or driver category.

Do not apply one general speed figure to the complete trip. Posted limits, temporary restrictions and instructions at works or border controls take precedence.

Choose the light-vehicle e-vignette by recorded vehicle data

The official BG Toll service provides e-vignettes for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass up to 3.5 tonnes. The purchase is tied to the registration country, plate, vehicle category and selected validity period, so verify every recorded field before payment.

A separate trailer e-vignette is required when a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes tows a trailer and their combined technically permissible maximum mass exceeds 3.5 tonnes. The planner cannot infer this from a car route.

Use the heavy-vehicle route or distance-based product when required

Vehicles above 3.5 tonnes use the heavy-vehicle charging arrangements rather than an ordinary light-vehicle e-vignette. BG Toll includes a route-pass service, and the applicable declaration depends on the vehicle and paid-road journey.

Confirm the category and planned charged sections in the official service before movement. Do not treat a passenger-car route calculation as a toll declaration for a truck, coach or other heavy vehicle.

Treat purchase confirmation and validity checking separately

Use the official portal or an authorised channel and retain the payment evidence. BG Toll warns that bank-transfer processing can take at least three business days after authorisation and that the product becomes valid only after payment is received and reconciled.

The public validity lookup is useful for checking recorded status but is not proof of payment. Third-party sellers add error and refund risk, so check the plate, country, category and start date in the official system before entering a charged road.

Prepare the documents for every jurisdiction on the route

Confirm that the driving licence and motor insurance are valid in Bulgaria and in each transit country. For a borrowed or hired vehicle, combine its registration record with written proof of authorised use and any cross-border cover demanded by the owner or rental contract.

Road-charge evidence does not replace registration, insurance or permission to use the vehicle. Check each requirement independently before a cross-border trip.
