Driving in North Macedonia
Road status, toll payment, insurance recognition and temporary vehicle admission are separate checks in North Macedonia. Verify all four before a cross-border drive.
Check the state-road corridor and the local approaches
The Public Enterprise for State Roads identifies state-road sections and links current traffic conditions supplied by AMSM. Municipal streets, a border queue and access beyond the state road can change independently.
Recheck the exact state-road section and direction through PESR and AMSM near departure, then obey works signs and police controls. Only the current authority information can settle whether the intended lane or border approach remains open.

Treat weather and winter restrictions as live controls
Mountain corridors can have snow, fog, rockfall or vehicle-specific equipment controls while lower roads remain passable. Use the current authority-linked traffic report for the section ahead instead of extrapolating from the weather at the origin.
Carry equipment appropriate to the vehicle and current rule, keep a lawful alternative and allow time for controlled traffic. A road reopening can still leave slow or restricted conditions.
Calculate tolls from the plaza route and vehicle category
North Macedonia uses toll stations on charged motorway sections rather than one nationwide passenger-car vignette. The official toll pages separate plazas, rates, vehicle categories and exempt vehicles.
Identify every plaza on the route and the actual vehicle or combination category. Do not apply one copied tariff to the whole trip, and do not treat payment as permission for a border or restricted road.
Choose a general or electronic toll lane deliberately
The road authority accepts cash in denars or euros, bank cards and its electronic collection products under their published conditions. A lane reserved for MTAG users is not a general cash or card lane.
Read the signal and lane marking before entering, retain the receipt and ask toll staff for help rather than reversing. Open Balkan interoperability is a separate account setup and should not be assumed from owning an unregistered tag.
Match border insurance evidence to the registration
The National Insurance Bureau determines when a foreign plate, Green Card or border policy is the accepted liability evidence. Electronic Green Card certificates are recognised under the Bureau's stated implementation, but the registration country and document validity still control the case.
Check the registration-country arrangement before reaching the border and keep the Bureau-accepted insurance evidence accessible. Complete that file with the licence, registration and, where applicable, the owner's or rental company's written permission.
Resolve temporary admission before changing drivers
Customs separately governs temporary import and use of a foreign-registered vehicle. The driver, owner's residence, purpose and time in the country can affect the procedure; traveller entry alone is not vehicle admission.
Retain the vehicle and customs records until exit and confirm whether another person may drive. Recheck the rental contract, insurer and next border because a continuous map line does not transfer those permissions.
Report the exact road or toll location
Call North Macedonia police on 192 and use the locally directed channel for medical or fire response. If possible, stop beyond the traffic stream and make the disabled vehicle conspicuous.
Identify the PESR road and the nearest named toll plaza, tunnel, settlement or border post, then report injuries and obstruction. Non-urgent recovery remains a separate request to the road authority or assistance provider.
