Driving in Serbia
Serbia's motorway tolls, live road restrictions and foreign-vehicle documents require separate checks. Confirm each one for the route and registration country.
Use Roads of Serbia for category I and II state roads
The Roads of Serbia Information Center covers category I and II state roads around the clock, including works, emergency changes, winter conditions and queues at motorway toll stations. A municipality remains the separate source for many local streets.
Check the named road and direction close to departure. The official application can show closures, bans, weather, toll stations, border crossings, landslides and rockfall, but current signs and police instructions still override a saved route.

Prepare for seasonal works and winter operation
The Information Center intensifies roadworks reporting during the tourist season and publishes winter-service information during the winter maintenance period. A clear motorway near Belgrade does not establish conditions on a mountain or border approach.
Check passability and the vehicle's required equipment for every state-road stage. Leave time for controlled traffic and keep an alternative that stays on reported roads rather than an unsigned shortcut.
Price the motorway from entry, exit and vehicle category
Serbian motorway toll is determined by the charged section and vehicle category, not by a passenger-car vignette. Manual users retain the entry record and pay at exit; electronic users follow the ETC contract and marked lanes.
Use the official calculator for the actual entry, exit and vehicle or trailer combination. Do not reuse an old tariff or assume a passenger-car category when height, axles or mass place the combination elsewhere.
Keep the entry record and stay in the correct lane
A lost or unreadable entry record and an incorrect vehicle category require operator handling. Keep the record until payment, read the lane symbols before committing and request help rather than reversing or changing lanes across a barrier.
An ETC device or interoperable account is a payment arrangement only. It does not settle licence, insurance, customs or border-entry requirements.
Match licence and insurance evidence to the visitor
Serbia permits a qualifying temporary visitor to drive on a valid foreign or international licence during the temporary stay. The six-month exchange rule described by the Ministry applies to permanent-residence cases and should not be presented as a universal visitor entitlement.
For insurance, plates from states covered by the multilateral agreement and Montenegro are accepted under the stated arrangements; vehicles from other Green Card members may still require a valid Green Card. Check the current country treatment before entry.

Plan the Kosovo sequence before approaching the crossing
For a foreign traveller, Serbia-to-Kosovo and Kosovo-to-Serbia are not interchangeable entry sequences. Current UK travel advice says a traveller approaching Serbia from Kosovo may be refused when the passport lacks an earlier Serbian entry stamp issued at a recognised Serbian entry point.
Check the traveller's documents, the vehicle's insurance and rental permission, and current crossing conditions before departure. When the entry sequence does not work, use a lawful route through a third country; a calculated line cannot cure the document problem.
Use the state-road information line and emergency services correctly
The Roads of Serbia Information Center provides current state-road information on 0800 100 104. Use the emergency numbers listed by the official road application or call police on 192 when immediate police assistance is required.
When contacting Serbia's services, use the state-road number plus the nearest interchange, tunnel, border post or toll station and lead with casualties or blocked traffic. Roads of Serbia information, a 192 police emergency and vehicle recovery remain distinct contacts.
